About

Been reading a few other blogs lately and I’ve wanted some basic info about the author.. hence the “About” page.. this page has been a placeholder for far too long so thought I’d better get around to putting some meaningful stuff here for anyone who wants a brief snapshot of me…

Who is Baggas?

Baggas is Paul Baggaley. I’m an early thirties doctor living in the southern beachside suburbs of Perth, Western Australia. Married to Jennifer with three kids Owen (2001), Luke (2003), and Mia (2008). We are also on the long journey towards adopting our fourth child, from Ethiopia, in the next few years…

Work

My current job is as a General Practitioner aka family doctor. My special interests are in the areas of Obstetrics (have delivered hundreds of babies in the last few years), children’s health, and travel and tropical medicine.

Previously I was involved in surgical training with a specific interest in neurosurgery but once my kids came along I realised how incompatible that is with a balanced family life so I made the wise move shifting into GP (and perhaps not so wise move of doing obstetrics)

My qualifications to date are MBBS, FRACGP, DRANZCOG
I am also currently studying towards a MPH&TM (Masters of Public Health & Tropical Medicine) through James Cook University in Queensland with the goals of incorporating more Travel medicine into my practice and ultimately doing more and more work in developing countries. In the past few years I have been on a number of trips doing medical work in Uganda which has been incredibly rewarding.

Life

Aside from my family, work, and studies, the other main things that fill up my life are church and music (often a combination of the two). I’ve been a Christian most of my life and am heavily involved in our excellent local church, where my main ministry involvement has been in the worship team. I mainly play lead guitar but also contribute vocals and occasionally a bit of mandolin.

… anyway that’s enough for now. You can learn a lot more about me from this blog, or facebook, or if you have any questions, just ask…

hi Paul – just wanted to commend to you ‘Velvet Elvis’ by Rob Bell – if you are not aleady familiar with it. great insights into the world and prevailing customs that Jesus grew up in and gives fresh understanding to such terms as ‘yoke’ as in ‘take My yoke upon you and learn from Me’ – so we see why successful fisherman drop every thing to follow Jesus; &c.
(Rob Bell is the originator of the Nooma series)

    great blog site you have!

Yeh I’ve read Velvet Elvis – a good book if I recall. I’m yet to try his next book – “sex God” – not sure if that title will sell more or less copies.

    http://members.tripod.com/~baggas/rhabdo.html

You may want to correct the following
“… serum concentrations ranging from 300ng/ml to 2 g/ml and produces visible pigmenturia (classically a “coca-cola” coloured urine) at concentrations exceeding 250 g/ml.(6)….” As great as g/ml?

    Hey Paul,
I was just checking out your website because my husband and I are looking for a doctor having just moved to Perth from Portland, OR (home of the decemberists—I see you are a fan :) I’m checking into health insurance since companies (my husband is an engineer downtown) in Australia don’t provide like in the States! Anyway, I just found out I’m pregnant (ahhh :) and was wondering if you had any advice on where to start looking for health coverage?! Blessings on your family! Have a super night, Diana
