Last day

Categories : General Practice |

Last day of work in my current job today, and the end of my first six months of general practice. It’s a bit sad to be moving on. It’s been a good place to work, a generally good bunch of patients, and the cruisiest hours I’ve ever had and possibly ever will have. Being able to go home for lunch a couple of times a week is a luxury I’ll miss, as is being able to cycle to work occasionally.

In terms of the transition from hospital work to GP, it hasn’t been all that hard. I’ve fairly quickly adapted to the pace of things and already have my own style of practice. I always try and keep running on time – I hate keeping people waiting very long. If a person has a complex problem or multiple problems that can’t be sorted out within the time slot, I get them to come back another day (as long as it isn’t an emergency of course, in which case delays are unavoidable) – most people are pretty understanding of this and are appreciative of a doctor who isn’t running late all the time. Still got a bit to learn though – there’s just some things that you never see in hospital work – minor things like strange rashes and various musculoskeletal complaints. Anyway all up GP is turning out to be a very satisfying career move, mostly because of the variety of people I get to help every day. I’m still working out exactly what my role is, and how to mesh GP in with the rest of my life, especially my faith, but I’m on the right track.

Stay tuned next week for my life as a country doctor :)
