Shallow grave

I’ve just spent the last 2 hours digging a 2m x 1.8m x 0.5m deep hole in the corner of my backyard (and hence I am now totally buggered). So if anyone has a body they need to dispose of in a hurry, you know who to call…

Does left and right mean the same anymore

This whole Tasmanian forestry issue has been very interesting to follow over the last few days. Latham’s policy has copped a lot of flak, including from one of his own MPs, while Howard has effectively sacrificed the green vote (not that he really ever had it anyway, the ALP-Green preference deal was done quite a while ago) but has probably more than made up for it in recruiting the votes in Tasmania. The most peculiar story was this one which reported how burly unionists in Tasmania have now strongly swung into the Howard camp, lavishing him with cheers and praise at a town hall meeting, on the same day that one of Australia’s capitalist kings, James Packer, threw his corporate weight behind the coalition.

It just goes to show the old ideological left-right divide of the past means less now than it used to. Society can’t be quite so neatly compartmentalized as before. All of which makes for a very interesting result on Saturday. Last week I was getting the feeling that Latham was a strong chance of getting up, but now it seems the momentum has swung back in Howard’s direction - we shall see if it holds that way for another 3 days…
