Health and fitness : the real facts

Here’s yet another humorous health related email, courtesy of my dad :

The Facts:
Q: I’ve heard that cardiovascular exercise can prolong life. Is this true?
A: Your heart is only good for so many beats, and that’s it…don’t waste them on exercise. Everything wears out eventually. Speeding up your heart will not make you live longer; that’s like saying you can extend the life of your car by driving it faster. Want to live longer? Take a nap.

Q: Should I cut down on meat and eat more fruits and vegetables?
A: You must grasp logistical efficiencies. What does a cow eat? Hay and corn. And what are these? Vegetables. So a steak is nothing more than an efficient mechanism of delivering vegetables to your system. Need grain? Eat chicken. Beef is also a good source of field grass (green leafy vegetable). And a pork chop can give you 100% of your recommended daily allowance of vegetable products.

Q: Should I reduce my alcohol intake?
A: No, not at all. Wine is made from fruit. Brandy is distilled wine, that means they take the water out of the fruity bit so you get even more of the goodness that way. Beer is also made out of grain. Bottoms up!

Q: How can I calculate my body/fat ratio?
A: Well, if you have a body and you have body fat, your ratio is one to one. If you have two bodies, your ratio is two to one, etc.

Q: What are some of the advantages of participating in a regular exercise program?
A: Can’t think of a single one, sorry. My philosophy is: No Pain…Good

Q: Aren’t fried foods bad for you?
A: YOU’RE NOT LISTENING!!!. Foods are fried these days in vegetable oil.In fact, they’re permeated in it. How could getting more vegetables be bad for you?

Q: Will sit-ups help prevent me from getting a little soft around the middle?
A: Definitely not! When you exercise a muscle, it gets bigger. You should only be doing sit-ups if you want a bigger stomach.

Q: Is chocolate bad for me?
A: Are you crazy? HELLO …… Cocoa beans … another vegetable!!!
It’s the best feel-good food around!

Q: Is swimming good for your figure?
A: If swimming is good for your figure, explain whales to me.

Q: Is getting in-shape important for my lifestyle?
A: Hey! ‘Round’ is a shape!

Disclaimer :
as a doctor I in no way endorse the above advice. In fact, if you follow it I will expect to be seeing a lot more of you in years to come, so I can prescribe you medication to treat your blood pressure, heart disease, and cholesterol. Now go and enjoy some beef!

The Last Day

Final day of the election campaign today, and this is what I woke up to find on the front page of The West Australian :
alston.jpgSums up the whole campaign quite well don’t you think? I haven’t read through the whole paper yet but from a quick look at the editorial, which is also partly reprinted on the front page, the West is giving it’s endorsement to Howard (”with misgivings”)…

“Mr Latham has performed well for much of the campaign - particularly in set pieces - and has sought to present himself as a reasonable man of the people. However people don’t know him and have cause for worrying about his reputation for being erratic and volatile. They are not convinced that the sedate man they have seen in the campaign is the true Mark Latham. He is also inexperienced as a leader.

Many voters believe they have seen too much of Mr Howard after his long term in office and not enough of Mr Latham. But now is not the time for experiments in the highest political job in Australia.

Mr Howard, for all his flaws, has presided over a flourishing economy with low inflation and interest rates. Australia has fought well above it’s size internationally under Mr Howard and has good standing in our region and the wider world community. The return of Mr Howard to the Lodge will be in the national interest.”

So there you go - the West is giving it to Howard, though presents it as a choice between two less than ideal leaders. It’ll be interesting if I get time later to have a look at some of the other major (more reputable papers) and see where they come down - my guess is most will take the safe option and side with the coalition.

And who’s my opinion of the best prospective PM? Well you may think it’s Howard from the things I’ve written, but he has actually gone down a lot in my estimation over the last few months. I think the best man to lead Australia forward is actually the one who’s waiting in the wings, the man Labor is trying to make us all scared of for some reason … Peter Costello. My hope is that the coalition wins and that Howard doesn’t hang around too long, giving Costello a good length of time to establish himself before the next election. But we shall see what the voters decide tomorrow…
