Trying to put together a child’s swing set at night when it’s very windy and raining is not a very clever idea. As a result of that (and a very busy weekend, and the fact that I have a cold now) I am suddenly very tired.

Well it looks like the fledgeling Family First Party may well end up holding the balance of power in the senate, and there’s plenty of sour grapes from Bob Brown and the Greens, who despite increasing their vote, have effectively been neutered by the new conservative senate majority (although the new senate doesn’t sit until July of next year)

So who are Family First? Well it seems that they are ostensibly a Christian Party, derived mostly from the ranks of the Assemblies of God churches, although they try to keep this under wraps, seeking a more mainstream approval. Their first candidiate came from the Paradise Church in Adelaide, home of Planetshakers and Guy Sebastian.
Anyway if you want more information check out their homepage, which has minimal mention of religion or Christianity at all, just the generic term “family values” Some pundits have said that the election result from Saturday heralds the arrival of the “religious right” movement in Australia, but for a group which seems to downplay it’s religious connections as much as possible, I don’t think you can make that claim. I’m not sure that all this secrecy is doing them any favours though.
For a completely different, more leftish, view of the party, take a look at this article at Crikey.com - I don’t agree with the author’s conclusions and judgements about the party, but it makes for an interesting read and reveals a bit more background info about them. I’ll be interested to see if this article is updated yet again following the election result, and what the author’s take on it will be… my guess is more of Bob Brown’s sour grapes.
With all the sour grapes around on the left side of politics at the moment, you could make a very large batch of vinegar.

Just got back to work and loaded my email to see this disappointing news : Christopher Reeve, the star of the Superman movies, has died after a heart attack. It’s a real shame - he was a great man, tireless in his work for victims of spinal cord injuries. I’m sure he will be sorely missed by many…
