No parole
Exellent article here about Mark Chapman, the man who shot John Lennon in 1980 After 24 years in prison he has recently been denied parole for the third time. And there was even a petition aiming to keep him behind bars in the lead up to this.
Now is all this fair? Should Chapman be treated any differently because it was John Lennon that he killed and not just some anonymous real estate agent or music teacher? Sure Chapman was clearly disturbed when he did it, it was a very serious crime to take another person’s life, more hurtful to many because it was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century, but he’s done his time and from what I can see, seems to be reformed in many ways, including claiming to be a “born-again Christian” (as so many famous inmates seem to do). This may well be the truth but even if it were not, he hardly seems to be a threat to society in general, or specifically Yoko Ono, Julian and Sean, or even Paul and Ringo. He commited a horrible crime but maybe it’s about time he was given a second chance.
And before any Beatlemaniacs start arguing, let me first state that I’m a big time Beatles fan too - I’ve got all their orginal albums as well as several other compilations and DVDs etc - and yet I can bring myself to forgive Chapman. And I like to think John probably would have too… now what do you think?
