So far my car crash adventure the other day has proved to be a very positive experience. Not only did I walk away from it unscathed, but I also got to meet a bunch of interesting people. Funnily enough the old guy who gave me a lift to town after my smash came in to see me today for his driver’s license medical exam, and for once I was able to say I could personally attest to his driving skills. Turns out he’s a big gemstone collector and travels the country looking for rocks, which he hones into these beautiful stones. He invited me to check out his gallery some time and I just might.

The most tangible benefit of my crash is that it’s given me an excuse to buy a new car, which I did today. tribute_beach.jpg We settled upon a Mazda Tribute Limited Sport V6, which is a medium sized 4WD. It’s nearly exactly the same as the Ford Escape, of which I test drove a 4 cyclinder version, but the 3.0L V6 was so much nicer to drive. Also the Mazda V6 comes with several features as standard that are only in the more deluxe versions of the Ford, like cruise control (which will hopefully cut down on the number of speeding camera fines which keep arriving in my mailbox, most recently today) and alloy wheels. Can’t wait to pick it up - it’s being delivered to the dealer on Wednesday which is perfect timing as that’s when I have to give back the car I’m currently borrowing. Everything has just worked out so perfectly ever since I clamboured from the wreckage of my old car, it’s amazing!

Don’t know how much I’m gonna get to drive it though. Jenni’s already got dibs on “her car” - I’m going to have to be very surreptitious if I want to take it for a spin off road, especially considering the outcome of my last departure from the bitumen… My (big) little brother the 4WD enthusiast is very keen to see what it can do though so we’ll have to find an excuse to escape for a few hours sometime.

The Complete set

This news makes me wish I was either :
(a) in India right now
(b) had Foxtel installed at my house

Australia have finally won a Test Cricket series in India, under the brilliant leadership of Adam Gilchrist (who needs Ponting when we’ve got Gilly?) This virtually cements the team’s claim to being the greatest of all time.

“Australia have the complete set of trophies: the Ashes, the Sir Frank Worrell Trophy, the World Cup, the Trans-Tasman Trophy, the Southern Cross Trophy, triumphs over all nations, the runaway world No.1 ranking and as of 4.24pm in Nagpur, the Border-Gavaskar Trophy …. Australia can do no more. It has dominated world cricket for 15 years and as good as Warwick ‘The Big Ship’ Armstrong’s team was in the 1920s, Sir Donald Bradman’s ‘Invincibles’ in 1948 and the West Indies during the 1980s … they cannot have been any better than this.”

Doctor ID and the Paediatric ER

Just discovered a great medical cartoon strip. Pretty much sums up my experience perfectly from when I used to work in the paediatric emergency department up at the children’s hospital. Doctors will find it hilarious because it’s so true but I think most others will appreciate it too (unless of course you happen to be a paranoid hyperchondriac parent who’s also sensitive about coarse language) - check it out :-)
