The Jesus Tomb

Categories : Bible, News, Religion |

I haven’t seen it feature in the mainsteam media much as yet, but reports are beginning to circulate on the net about Titanic director James Cameron’s latest documentary, about a tomb unearthed in Jerusalem which they claim is that of Jesus and his family. For some reason this doesn’t seem to be garnering the kind of attention that the Gospel of Judas got last year, even despite the Hollywood clout of Cameron. Perhaps because their premise and logic is so far-fetched that it simply smacks of a pseudo-controversy drummed up to sell books and videos.

Anyway, before this story gets any more attention, let me point you in the direction of some good blog entries on the subject by some reputable New Testament scholars :

I’m going to be talking to Ross Clifford, Principal of Morling Theological College and President of the Baptist Union in Australia, about this subject on my radio programme tomorrow morning.

I’ll be linking to the mp3 of our conversation on my blog after the event for anyone who misses our chat.

The Witherington protests too much, methinks!

Was it only 5 years ago when Ben Witherington claimed the “James Ossuary” as proof of the existence of Jesus Christ and as PROOF AGAINST the Ever-Virginity of the Mother of God? Was it only 5 years ago when BW was all over the news breathlessly arguing for the authenticity of his bone-box and revealing his humble belief that he was somehow chosen (like some Holy Prophet) to deliver this good news to the world and the bad news to the poor, benighted Roman Catholics and Orthodox Christians?

Surely Witherington must realize by now, even as he is being used anew by the enemies of the Faith (Cameron & Co. have linked Witherington’s “James Ossuary” to the “Jesus Tomb!”), that he was never a Prophet but always just a pawn.

Witherington uses his “James Ossuary” against the Ever Virgin, Theotokos, Mary:

Witherington never disavowed his own ship/ossuary full-o-holes, and now that fraud is being tied to an even greater and possibly more dangerous fraud.

Sow the wind reap the whirlwind…

Thanks for the article Joe. As far as I\’m concerned the ossuary proves nothing whatsoever about James, Jesus, or the perpetual viginity of Mary (which as a Protestant I wouldn\’t adhere to, but neither do I criticize you for believing – see Scot McKnight\’s blog a few months back for an interesting discussion of the topic)

I can\’t vouch for Witherington\’s views (previous or current) on the James Ossuary, but his current post is aiming to discredit the \’Jesus Tomb\’ which is why I posted it. Otherwise I\’ve read a few of BWs books and I\’ve always found them challenging and thought-provoking, though I wouldn\’t necessarily always agree with his conclusions.
